Clayton Could Become a Hot Address When Aerotropolis Plans Take Flight

Clayton County is about to take off.  Home of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA), the most traveled airport in the world, Clayton is transforming into one of metro Atlanta’s prime suburbs, with the help of Aerotropolis Atlanta.

The Aerotropolis is on a mission to develop Clayton, South Fulton and the 10 cities surrounding the airport into thriving communities where people live, work and play by stimulating investment and smart development.  Within 10 years, the multi-county coalition of government, business and civic leaders who govern the Aerotropolis envision a world class airport city using H-JAIA, affordable housing, access to major interstates and the availability of land to develop office, business and retail space as key marketing tools. They want Clayton, the cities of South Fulton, College Park, Hapeville, East Point, Forest Park and others nearby to bustle with commerce like Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Potential for Economic Development 

With more than 63,000 jobs to move more than 280,000 passengers to more than 200 destinations in the U.S. and 50 countries, H-JAIA has a direct economic impact on metro Atlanta of $34.8 billion, according to a recent study.  The Aerotropolis wants to capture and retain some of those dollars in Clayton to attract Fortune 500 corporations and sustainable development through regional collaborations with neighboring cities and counties.

Undeveloped Land in Clayton

Clayton currently has more undeveloped land than any other U.S. city in close proximity to an airport, according to the Aerotropolis.  As Atlanta becomes more congested with traffic and housing prices continue to soar while space to build becomes scarcer, Aerotropolis leaders believe there’s nowhere to grow but south.

Revitalization is already underway.

New Real Estate Development 

Porsche Cars of North America opened its headquarters and the Porsche Experience Center test track and road course in 2016.  Upscale multi-family housing with cool names is cropping up like the Atlantic Aerotropolis in Hapeville and the Pad on Harvard in College Park.

Aerotropolis Community Improvement Districts have been formed.

Meanwhile, the Aerotropolis created three collectives to help advance their mission:

  • Economic Development to communicate a unified message to potential developers and investors about the vision and quality of life Aerotropolis cities and counties want;
  • Workforce Development to link Aerotropolis-area businesses to prospective employees from the community; and
  • Education to partner with local schools to support learning and experiential based outcomes.
